Certified Medication Aide (Healthcare)
Provides quality medication administration to residents which includes non-injectable medications, under the supervision of a licensed nurse; reports pertinent information to the immediate supervisor; responds to inquiries or requests for information; assists the immediate supervisor with tasks to support department operations.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned by the licensed nurse.
1.Under the supervision of a licensed nurse, CMAs may administer:
a)Oral, sublingual and buccal medications
b)Eye medications with the exception of eye medications to new post-operative eyeresidents.
c)Ear medications
d)Nasal medications
e)Rectal medications
f)Vaginal medications
g)Skin ointments, topical medications including patches and transdermalmedications;
h)Medications by gastrostomy and jejunostomy tubes
i)Premeasured medication delivered by Aerosol/Nebulizer; and
j)Medications delivered by metered hand-held inhalers.
2.Responsible for administering PRN medications as directed by the licensed nurse tostable residents according to physician's or nurse practitioner's orders in thefollowing circumstances;
a)In response to a specific request by the resident
The resident request must be reported to the licensed nurse
The resident response must be reported to the licensed nurse
b)At the direction of the licensed nurse, when:
A licensed nurse assesses the resident prior to administration of the PRN medications, and
A licensed nurse assessed the resident following the administration of the PRN medication.
c) Responsible for monitoring vital signs prior to medication administration, as directed and reporting as directed to the licensed nurse.
d) Ensures that accurate medication records are maintained. Records medications administered or omitted on the resident's clinical record sheet. Records reasons a medication was omitted and reports omission to the licensed nurse.
e) Codes the score on the pain scale that the resident directs prior to and after the administration of PRN pain medications as directed by the licensed nurse.
f) Records narcotics administered or received on the appropriate controlled drug count sheet.
g) Responsible for promptly reporting any medication errors made or noted, and for completing appropriate forms.
h) Nursing technicians (students) will be excluded from scheduled drug administration.
i) Protects the personal belongings of each resident including eyeglasses, dentures, hearing aids, furnishings, jewelry, clothing, memorabilia, etc. Promptly reports missing items according to established policy.
j) Performs various tasks assigned by the charge nurse including vital signs, residents' weights, applying creams/ointments, collecting specimens, as well as lifting, moving, and transporting residents, using proper body mechanics or lifting devices for accident prevention.
k) Responsible for keeping records documenting care provided or other information in keeping with department policies while performing all job responsibilities in accordance with prescribed safety and infection control procedures including thorough hand washing, use of disposable gloves where indicated, and proper disposal of soiled materials.
l) Completes requirements for in-service training, acceptable attendance,
dress codes including personal hygiene, and other work duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
QUALIFICATIONS
Current CMA certificate
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
Current state CMA certification and in good standing in the state and have at least one year of experience. Able to follow written direction, comprehend verbal instructions, and write at a level necessary to accomplish the job. Capable of performing the Essential Functions of this job, with or without reasonable accommodation. Basic knowledge and skills utilizing care tracking systems.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Able to communicate effectively, in English, with personnel at all levels of the organization, with residents and their friends and family, and with members of the community. Moderate reading, writing and grammar skills.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Moderate mathematics skills.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to communicate residents needs, problem-solve with supervisor.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Primarily works in resident rooms, nurse's station, and other service areas throughout the building.
