Special Education Teacher - Walter Lawson Children's Home (Education)
Must hold a valid Illinois Teaching License with LBS I Approval
Reports to:
Principal
Supervises:
Classroom Paraprofessionals and/or student teacher (if assigned)
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Instructional Responsibilities:
Serve as the Case Manager for assigned students.
Actively participate in IEP (Individualized Education Program) Team meetings.
Perform student observations and assessments as needed.
Interpret assessment results and provide progress reports for IEP documentation.
Coordinate IEP Team members to develop appropriate IEPs based on a comprehensive evaluation of student data and assessments.
Plan, design, and implement IEPs.
Develop lesson plans and instructional materials tailored to student needs.
Provide individual and small group instruction when appropriate.
Additional duties as assigned.
Evaluation:
Continuously assess the current level of student attainment of skills outlined in IEPs.
Regularly evaluate student progress to determine future educational needs and direction.
Curriculum Development & Instructional Improvement:
Stay current with educational trends and adapt instructional methods and curriculum to meet the needs of students.
Seek new instructional strategies and materials if current resources are inadequate for specific student needs.
Supervision:
Provide training for instructional assistants and student interns, focusing on assessment and instructional strategies.
Conduct annual evaluations of paraprofessionals assigned to the classroom.
Record Keeping & Reporting:
Maintain accurate records of student attendance, assessments, evaluations, IEP data, student schedules, progress reports, and significant communication or events.
Ensure classroom consistency by preparing and maintaining a substitute teaching binder, including attendance, lesson plans, daily schedules, and other relevant student information.
Classroom Management:
Maintain a positive and productive learning environment.
Properly store and care for instructional equipment, and report any damage, loss, or theft.
Professional Responsibilities:
Attend faculty and committee meetings, as well as conferences as requested by the principal.
Maintain professional competence through in-service training and/or self-directed professional development activities.
Motivational Leadership:
Lead by example, fostering a positive working environment.
Develop relevant activities to help students acquire necessary skills.
Provide effective instruction and a supportive environment that encourages positive attitudes and behavior.
Health & Safety Practices:
Follow health and safety protocols, including infection control and proper lifting techniques.
